Best Practices for Preparing for College
The Yale Black Alumni Association of Atlanta would like to invite your current 9th-11th grade students and their parents to Banneker High School for a one-day college preparation event. The event will consist of a college preparation & career panel of African American Yale graduates, followed by a series of students and parent workshops run by various organizations around Atlanta. The student workshops will highlight the aspects of an application that admission officers consider most important, and assist students in developing their own plan for gaining admission into their top-choice college. While the students are in their seminars, parents will learn about the financial aspect of preparing for college; grants, scholarships, and loans.

The Yale Black Alumni Association of Atlanta intends to share with South Fulton County students and families the best practices for preparing for college. The event will be held at Banneker High School (5935 Feldwood Road, College Park) on May 12, 2012 and will last from 9:30am-2pm. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or the organizer for the Yale Black Alumni Association of Atlanta Jeremy Harp (**jeremy.harp@aya.yale.edu**). I have attached the flyer for the event to this e-mail, feel free to distribute it to your students/parents and post it as you see fit. This will truly be a wonderful event and Banneker is excited to be its host. Thank you so much for your time and support.

Students will also get the opportunity to tour engineering research facilities and interact with engineers and engineering students. This program focuses on necessary skills for success, such as, problem solving, design and analysis, team building, project management and communications. The result is a program that will help youth gain practical knowledge of and experience in an engineering career.

How is my child served through TAG in high school?
Typically we have seminars where students learn, extend and apply ideas in a safe environment designed to help our students think differently about our world and how they can be successful in it. We have run seminars such as Freshman Focus, Competitions (Future Problem Solving, Academic Bowl, Stock Market Game and others - all based on STUDENT interest & participation), College Prep, Inside Outside Link and Independent Projects.
If your child is unable to attend TAG once a week (must be served an hour a week by law), then they can earn their credit through an AP Course (provided they earn an A or B unweighted), through Dual Enrollment or TAG Internship. Without one of two options successfully completed and submitted, students will not be able to earn their TAG credit for that semester.

What is Mrs. Edgar's role?
My job is to provide support and services, resources and assistance to my students and their families to optimize success beyond high school. I am also a reference that can be utilized when students are applying to special programs and need a reference of their participation. Remember, my students are one in a population of 94 TAG students this year in a school population under 1800. They ARE special indeed!

How can my child accelerate out of high school?

What is recommended for students from 10th - 12th grade?
Taking one or more AP courses every year. Colleges will always PAY more in scholarship money for successful GRADES (exams don't hurt but will not cancel out) earned in an AP course. AP is never more difficult than college. Other APs not offered at LHHS can be taken through virtual campus locations. Check out the link below!

Speakers:
A. Burnett - How did I earn grants to pay for school?
*Apply to a range of schools - two few mean too little options
*Call/contact them regularly - make sure they KNOW who you are - make your application come alive by being an "active voice"
*Persistence - Do NOT give up or you will go to the bottom of the paper pile, submit many applications for scholarships and grants
*Apply early and check often on your status
*Be willing to ask questions - the ones not asked could have been the break or opportunity you needed at that time.

Dr. McGinnins - Director of Synergistic Youth, Upward Bound Services. Check out their website:
http://www.syeinc.org/upwardbound.htm They primarily work with 9th & 10th grade students, have a YOUTH board of directors and a future STEM program in the works. We are planning some collaboration opportunities in the future - are you on board?
